Girls defend district title; boys finish 2nd

While the girls wrestling team took first and the boys team finished second in District 26-5A, eight McCallum wrestlers took first place individual titles at the district meet. Girls Adriana Boortz, Makenna Mabon, Jasmine Janea Davis, Maya Shimizu and boys Isak Contreras, Omar Resendiz, Ransom Cloke, and Michael Kelly all became district champions in their respective weight classes. All will advance to Regionals on Saturday and Friday, Feb. 12-13, at Delco Center.  Giselle Cruz and Jack Davern won first place in the JV division.

As head coach Thomas Gammerdinger claps for his team, defenders Isa Lopez Reed and Ruby Barnett flank Madi Briggs as she raises the area championship trophy before rushing to her teammates with it. Considering that Lopez Reed, Briggs, Barnett and Sienna Gunning anchored the back line throughout the game, the image seems like an apt symbol for how the game was won.
